Your Baby Today: Tools & Resources: Tip of the Day

From Your Baby Today

Below is a list of tips that have appeared on Your Baby Today home page since the program began. Tips are updated on this page on a weekly basis.

  • Ask your doctor about a flu shot if you will be in your second or third trimester in winter.
  • Avoiding greasy, spicy foods will prevent heartburn during pregnancy.
  • To ease heartburn during pregnancy, chew a stick of non-peppermint gum.
  • Avoid raw egg foods like Caesar salad dressing if pregnant.
  • If pregnant, avoid unpasteurized soft cheeses, like feta, goat cheese, blue cheese, brie, and camembert.
  • While pregnant avoid fresh tuna, shark, or swordfish, which may have more contamination than other fish.
  • Experts recommend reading to your baby (even newborns) for at least 20 minutes per day.
  • While planning for pregnancy, make a point of traveling and going out on the town - enjoy your freedom while you can!
  • While pregnant, avoid herbal therapies unless your doctor approves it.
  • If planning for pregnancy, ask your doctor to check for an under active thyroid, which may cause miscarriages.
  • Give your newborn only sponge baths at first until her umbilical cord heals.
  • Consider inviting a professional photographer to the hospital when your child is born.
  • If your newborn wets six diapers per day, you can be sure you are breastfeeding him enough.
  • Vitamin B may help ease nausea during early pregnancy.
  • If you have a cold during pregnancy, reach for chicken soup before over-the-counter cold medicine.
  • If your breasts are tender during pregnancy, try wearing a bra to bed.
  • If pregnant or trying to become pregnant, limit yourself to one cup of coffee, tea, or soda per day.
  • Use washcloths to grip a slippery baby when you hand baby over to another person during bath time.
  • Avoid overheating your baby with too many bedtime layers at night. Dress her in clothes an adult would feel comfortable wearing.
  • If breast-feeding, be sure to drink plenty of water.
  • If you're pregnant, a milkshake makes an excellent snack.
  • Take your iron supplement between meals with orange juice for better absorption.
  • If bottle-feeding, be sure that all soap is rinsed from the nipples.
  • Include your doctor's phone number in the list of emergency numbers near your phone.
  • If baby scratches himself, put mittens on those little hands.
  • To wean your older baby off the bottle at bedtime, try filling it with water instead of milk.
  • If your baby wakes up agitated and hysterical in the middle of the night, she or he may be overly tired. Try laying baby to bed earlier, and make sure baby naps.
  • Before you become pregnant, invest in a firm mattress for back support.
  • Your baby will sleep better if you set up a nighttime ritual and stick to it.
  • If your baby has hiccups, try distracting her by feeding with breast milk or formula.
