Is Your Home Child-Proof?

September 13, 1999

Is your home ready for that new or soon-arriving family member? Babyant.com is putting your house to the test. The following is a checklist of safety items every household should have. All of the safety items listed are inexpensive and easy to find and install. Be sure to consult your local specialists regarding any safety questions you may have. Protect your child from harm and injury and child-proof your home today!
  1. Night Lights
Place in hallways and bathrooms. Protect your child from bumps and bruises during toilet visits in the middle of the night.

  2. Safety Locks & Latches
Install on cabinet doors, drawers, toilet bowls, and kitchen appliances. Protect your child from poisonous household products, falling objects, and possible drowning. You may want to empty out a cabinet and designate it as a baby-safe cabinet where you can place toys and new items to cure your baby's curiosity.

  3. Swimming Pool Barriers
Whether you decide to install pool safety nets or self-closing swimming pool gates, be sure there is always adult supervision of your child at all times.

  4. Smoke Detectors
Install inside all bedrooms and in hallways. Your home should already be equipped with smoke detectors. Protect you and your family from fire-related injuries. Check your existing smoke detectors twice a year and install new ones where necessary.

  5. Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Install in hallways outside bedrooms and in areas with fuel burning appliances. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas produced when fuel is burned. Carbon Monoxide can leak into the house through faulty furnaces, water heaters, gas stoves, and other appliances. Be sure to also have your fuel burning appliances inspected annually by qualified specialists for leakage.

  6. Fire Extinguisher
Are you ready or equipped to put out even a small, self-contained fire? If you are not, consider purchasing a fire extinguisher. More importantly, familiarize yourself with the use of the fire extinguisher so that you are ready in the event of a house fire.

  7. First Aid Kit
Is your first aid kit unorganized and full of empty containers? It's time to restock. Be sure your first aid kit contains items for you to treat cuts and bruises, colds and fevers, and other common household mishaps.

  8. Emergency Numbers
Keep a list of important and emergency phone numbers posted on the refrigerator door or in a visible place. Be sure to include phone numbers of the police, fire department, poison control center, pediatrician, relatives, and neighbors.

  9. Baby Monitors
Ideal for nursery rooms. Be up to the minute with your baby's status at all times. Rest more easily knowing that your baby is sleeping in the next room without any problems.

  10. Electrical Outlet Plugs
Protect your curious baby from possible electrical shock by plugging up all of the outlets. Be sure that each plug has a tight fit, which cannot easily be removed by your baby.

  11. Door & Window Guards
Prevent your baby from falling out of windows or walking straight out of the front door without you knowing it. Install child-proof door knob covers and window locks to prevent these accidents from happening.

  12. Corner Guards & Door Stops
Cover and pad every conceivable sharp corners and counter tops in areas accessible to your child. Also prevent little finger from being pinched between closing doors by installing door stops or by simply placing a piece of cloth over the door hinges.

  13. Bath Mats
There are many hidden dangers in a seemingly harmless bath. Protect your child from slippery bath tubs and scalding hot water with temperature-sensitive, coloring changing, anti-slip adhesive appliques.

  14. Cord Shorteners
Long telephone cords, drape cords, and blind cords can be strangulation hazards. Be sure to purchase new or cut existing cords to keep out of your child's reach.

  15. Safety Gates
Install near entrances to stairs, the kitchen, and other off limit rooms. Be sure to securely install the safety gates and contact the manufactures with any questions or concerns.
